All seniors who have lived in Canada for 10 years or more can participate in Old Age Security programs. It is important to know that benefits under these programs are not paid automatically; seniors must apply for them. Depending on how long the senior has lived in Canada, additional requirements apply.

Old Age Security Program

Old Age Security (OAS) is a federally funded monthly pension paid to eligible seniors who are 65 years of age or older, who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents and who have lived in Canada for at least 10 years, starting at age 18. To be eligible for OAS, you can apply for it 12 months before your 65th birthday or the date you become eligible to receive it.

Seniors can receive the full amount if they have lived in Canada for 40 years. The highest amount in March 2006 was $ 487.54. Seniors who have lived in Canada for more than 10 years can receive a partial pension based on the number of years. I lived in Canada.

For example, if an elderly immigrant has lived and worked in the United States for four years, he or she may be entitled to a partial pension after living in Canada for six years. Russia, China, South Korea, Afghanistan, Iraq and Mexico do not have such social security agreements.

Canadian seniors who have emigrated from Canada to another country are only entitled to an OAS pension if they have lived in Canada for 20 years (after the age of 18). If the senior has lived in Canada for less than 20 years, the pension is payable within one month of separation and within six months of separation. For example, if a senior leaves Canada in January, he or she will receive payments until the end of July. If he or she returns to Canada to live, payments will resume in the month of return.
