As soon as you arrive in Canada, the first thing to do is obtain a Social Security Number (SIN). You cannot legally work without it. To identify you in Canada, government agencies (federal and state) use your SIN number. These 9-digit numbers allow you to receive employment, tax payments, and / or government benefits (such as the Canadian pension system and employment insurance). If you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, you can apply for a SIN.
If you are a temporary resident, you can only get a SIN if you have a work permit and a work permit (if you can work).
Children over the age of 12 can apply for their social security number.
